Free Tips for a Long Jump Starter Life

How to Limit Your Visits to an Auto Repair Shop

Today, the specialists from our auto repair shop in Loxahatchee, FL will focus on jump starting. We will provide you with several free tips that will help you avoid visits to a repair garage. Here is what we recommend that you do:

  1. Keep your jump starter charged, and avoid letting the unit sit in a highly discharged state for a long period of time. You should not forget that the batteries of a jump starter have no memory problems and can’t be harmed by frequent charges, even when only slightly discharged.

  2. Respect the cycle. Every jump cycle is a subject to a so called duty cycle in which your vehicle can be cranked only so long before a period of rest is needed. For almost all jump starters, the recommended duty cycle is 6 seconds of cranking, followed by 3 minutes of rest.

  3. Keep the exterior temperature in mind. Whenever the environment and circumstances allow you to, store your jump starter in a place with low moisture and moderate temperature (between 50°F and 70°F). Like the battery of an automobile, jump starter batteries which are exposed to extreme temperatures can get easily damaged over time.

  4. Disconnection. After you have completed a successful jump start, you should not forget to disconnect the jump starter from the running automobile immediately. Typical vehicle alternator output is much higher than the recommended recharge rate for a jump starter battery.

  5. Make sure that the clamps are well-cleaned. A battery which is in a poor condition may have battery acid on the posts, so wiping down the clamps after jump-starting a vehicle is a good practice to keep the clamps from corrosion. Mix some water with baking soda and use it along with a wire brush to effectively scrub the clamps that have high amounts of acid contact.
