Is Your Check Engine Light Distracting You When Driving?

How to Perform Engine Repair on Your Check Engine Light

There are several ways to reset a check engine light; however, some could be better than others. In some cases, it could be possible to switch off the light by using a diagnostic scanner; this is attached to the vehicle, usually by a professional engine repair specialist, and offers information on what caused the light to come on in the first place. Disconnecting the cars battery could temporarily switch of the light. However, the check engine indicators usually indicates a serious problem, and the best way to switch it off is by performing some much needed engine repair to fix the underlying issue.

When the Light is On

Officially referred to as a malfunction indicator lamp, this can go on for several reasons. With some cars, it could be something as easy as a loose gas cap, the car’s on board computer reads this as a gas leak within the emissions unit, or a change in humidity could make the light switch on. Mostly, it lights up to warn drivers about a defect with the engine, which needs to be investigated quickly. Should the light be red, not yellow, or should it be blinking, it’s normally a sign of serious problems which have to be looked at immediately.

Most engine repair experts recommend checking the gas tank cap first, it could be loose, so tightening may make the light go off. Sometimes, the gas cap is lost or breaks, however, replacing it is a quick and inexpensive job. You should check under the hood to ensure there aren’t any visible problems such as a leaking hose or damaged wires which have to be repaired before they get any worse.

Check Error Codes

When this light comes on, an error code is logged within the on board computer. Using the correct tool, which is known as an automotive diagnostic scanner, you are able to read this code and find out what’s happening with your car. Relatively cheap code readers are available to buy, some for under a $100 Dollars. However, an automotive parts store or engine repair shop could check it for free. These readers may clear the code off the computer, with some cases, switching the light off easily.
